Hello,
I would like to ask any suggestion for any anime character name if you draw it for both male and female?
Must the anime character name be japanese or english?

Any suggestion or advice for a anime character name if you drawn one?Feel free to post here. :)

Hi nicklausyap :D

Well, its a manga, so I'd usually use Japanese names.
Although, yeah. It's hard to think of any.
If you make one up, you might mess up the true meaning instead.
You can either rip names (Jiro being my fav lol)
Or use those Japanese baby name generator (LOL).
Generate until you get the meaning to suite the character. XD
I use both methods occasionally XD

Sometimes I'd use English name for short mangas.
Because I can just use "John", instead of the full name "John Kawasaki Toyota Honda". Loljk.
Less likely people would call each other with full name in short ones.

For me I take a word, such as Lavender and scramble it into Dalavan (male character).
You also can reverse it or add another word.
I also add an alphabet into a scramble,change and remove the word such as;
Revenge into Egnever and add I,E change A remove R then it became Ignieva.
Sometime when you scramble all of this words it can be meaning full.

It really depends on what kind of character you're making.

Is it a character of your original story? If so, then where is your story set? What is your character's background? What ethnicity is he/she? Bear in mind that anime doesn't always equate to Japanese. There've been plenty of anime that took place in fantasy worlds, Europe, China, USA, etc.

If you insist on making your character Japanese, I suggest that you research on Japanese names. I've seen many people make up names by using direct translations of certain words, and by smacking cool-sounding Japanese words together to make a name, both of which creates weird results, usually. Know the differences between Onyomi and Kunyomi when using kanji for naming -- never mix the two. Heck, even looking up Japanese baby names helps.

The same should be applied if you want to use names that are not Japanese. Research their origins and meanings, if you must. Before you do so, know who your character is first!

But if you're naming anime characters just for some fun and giggles, then I suppose you don't need to think too hard on it.

I agree with zelkats. Not all manga characters need to have a Japanese name, unless it's a Japanese setting you're going for, or it's a fantasy world drawing from Japanese influences. Personally, I'd say the name of the character would depend on where you're setting him or her, but even then, it's variable - for instance, your character may be living in Japan, but due to his being from and English family who moved to Japan because of the father's business, his name could be James, or Charles.

Just do lots of research, or you can simply draw from names you've heard of before, too. I'm sure you'll find a good name for your character!
